Gay rights and civil liberties campaigner Peter Tatchell is my hero and a photo of him with my daughter Olaf sits proudly on my desk. Can you believe that Tatch turned 68 the other day? I marched against clause 28 and will take no lectures on tolerance of the LGBT community from anyone. But the decision of Haringey Council to build a gay pride rainbow road crossing outseide of a local school is just daft virtue signalling.
Does anyone seriously think that a homophobe walking across the street will have his or her views changed by this crossing? It will change no-ones attitudes. But at a time when local authorities are all bleating about having to cut front line services because of “wicked Tory cuts” how can the expenditure on this project be justified?
But John McLaverty takes a different view. I suspect he thinks like most folks at Oxfam for whom he works. It has become a morally bankrupt NGO which, as I have noted many times, should be shut down at once, forcing folks like John to try working in the real world.
