As I wander back from my local doctors I look at the noticeboard of the Wick Academy and see that it boasts of having an Executive HeadTeacher. What the hell is that all about?
I think that in the olden days that is what was known as a Headmaster or Headmistress. Presumably to cope with transgender teachers we now have Headpersons as well. And maybe you can still be a Headmistress even if you are a bloke as long as you identify with being a woman. But what is an Executive Headteacher?
I think it is a recognition that schools must act like businesses. They spew out metrics to show how kids are getting ever better grades at A level and GCSE's which is nothing to do with grade inflation but is a reflection of the quality of the teaching staff. And thus in order to retain talent and stop these fucking brilliant teachers heading off to be headhunted by investment banks teachers have had massive pay rises.
And those managing such great enterprises should be viewed as the CEOs of the public sectors. BSD's who need not only very big pay packages indeed but also titles as well to show that they are of comparable status to CEOs of private sector companies. Hence a Headmistress is now an Executive Headteacher. New titles, pay rises all round and A*s for every single pupil who can read and write. No make that read or write.
What a brave new world we live in.
