Almost finally, in the small selection of photos uncovered by cousin John Stafford and found in the papers of Sir John Winnifrith is one of the woman at the heart of the mystery, Edith Maude Winnifrith. This shot is from 1899 when she would have been c24. Now look at the nose and chin.

My Aunt L says that these are family features that both Sir John and she inherited from the woman who was her grandmother. I do not have them and neither did my father – we look like Cochranes. The cleaning lady thinks that in terms of nose and chin, EMW looks like that photo of Edith Wingfield Digby aged in her late teens here. So was EWD her mother? And what about the mystery woman in her early twenties also in this very small set of photos. Who does she look like? I stare at all three photos and just wonder.
