Labour MP Stella Creasy brought her delightful three month old baby into the House of Commons debating chamber, was reprimanded by the speaker and now claims Parliament must drag itself into 2021. Really? Ms Creasy, those MPs backing her and her media supporters might consider what life is like for those of us outside the bubble.
Creasy earns £82,000 a year and her partner Dan Fox is no fool so her household income is likely to be well in excess of £100,000 so she could easily afford to put her baby in the Parliamentary nursery which will accept three month old babies. Meanwhile she might consider that many of the rest of us, this family included, have to fund non-subsidised nursery care from a household income which is a fraction of that in the Creasy Fox household. Is her position really that worthy of pity?
Meanwhile is it really fair to bring a baby not an actual working environment? You may think that Parliament is a place where those who think highly of themselves earn a packet spouting hot air or, if they are Tory Lords like the Earl of Shrewsbury, taking cash for asking questions with apparent impunity. But actually the debating chamber is meant to be a place of honest work. No sniggering at the back.
My wife could not bring a baby into the University library lest it disturb others trying to work. You could not take a baby into a working hospital or a law firm where your colleagues are trying to work. Why does Ms Creasy think her workplace should be any different?
That so many in the bubble think it is and that one should pity the childcare plight of a household earning well over a hundred grand a year, shows, again, how out of touch they are with the 99.9% of us living outside the Westminster bubble.
