The bottle marked vodka contains, of course, apple juice. Producing at 6 litres a day, I am rapidly running out of glass bottles so if anyone locally has any spare I will happily swap eight empties – which you were going to bin anyway – for one full of apple juice. There is a suggestion that the next batch will be apple and damson juice. It is worth one experimental run.
Meanwhile, the first batch of apple chutney is now in storage. I still have a stack of cooking apples on the tree. I can slip the odd one into the juice but the others are begging for another batch of chutney. As for the green tomatoes, before I panic and make yet more chutney I have stumbled across a recipe for Cajun green fried tomatoes which I shall try out this week. If that works I may well store more by freezing for use during the autumn and winter. If not then green tomato chutney as a Christmas present it is. Relatives and neighbours you have been warned.
