I rather wish I had not bothered watering my vegetables today as God has just watered them with a vengeance. Wales really has been wet this summer which, like the drought of a couple of years ago, will be cited by the GroupThink as definitive proof of global warming.
Before the heavens opened, K, a friend of mine, pitched up with her two young boys and, together with my kids, we filled a fourth basket full of strawberries. That basket has now provided two boxes for neighbours, a large one for K to take home and a smaller one for her Dad. There will be strawberries, yet again, in Joshua’s school snack box tomorrow and another litre of strawberry ice cream, my third of the year, is now in production.
There are now six bags of individually frozen strawberries in my office freezer to use in the Autumn or when other fruit are ripe enough to make a summer pudding. The blackcurrants, golden raspberries and gooseberries (dessert and normal) are now starting to show form so maybe the first summer pudding, which – of course – I will not be able to eat, is on the way.
Today I joined the 10 million other Brits on statins. But unlike, as far as I can see, 90% of them I am also altering my diet and taking exercise every day, to tackle my cholesterol and blood sugars. I am not saying it will work but I am trying and on the latter, at least, I am making good progress and have another blood test this week to see how much. Meanwhile I slave away in the kitchen producing puddings for the family that I can only admire with envy.
Back in the garden there are plenty more strawberries to come. All we need is God to bless Wales with a rare few days of sunshine and we will again be picking like mad.
