We were all told it was the warmest spring on record. I exhausted my supplies of wood, keeping my family warm by the stove into April. Readers across the UK tell a similar tale. As George Orwell put it in 1984 “ The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.” In this case the “party” is the Met Office and the media and political class GroupThink with, natch, the BBC at the forefront. So after that “warmest spring” what was forecast to happen next?
In 1984 Winston Smith would already be altering the two BBC stories from earlier this year that I show you below. The first one talks about the hottest day on record in Britain back in 2022 with measurements taken at Coningsby in Lincolnshire. What it dos not say is that this was RAF Coningsby for a brief period as fighter jets took off from the tarmac next to the measuring equipment. But what is critical is that these articles show the Met and others ramping up the rhetoric. 2024 will be the warmest year ever. Summers like 2022 will happen every two years going forward so after a dip in 2023 this summer was bound to be a scorcher.
We had a brief warm spell in August allowing the BBC to use weather maps coloured a lurid red for temperatures which on weather maps a few decades ago would have been yellow. But the Met Office has now ‘fessed. This summer was the coolest since 2015. and it gets worse. Ocean temperatures around the globe have fallen rapidly. This, you might think, rather undermines the narrative of non stop global warming which means that, to appease David Attenborough, George Monbiot, Chris Packham and th eDoom Goblin Greta Thunberg, Britain must destroy its economy with measures to avoid us all being burned to a crisp.
Well no. What we are now seeing is just climate change which will ultimately lead to global warming. Orwell would be proud. If the Met Office cannot forecast a few months ahead why on earth does anyone believe its 30 year projections?
