Photo article from the Welsh Hovel: first day of school beckons meaning I tie a tie for the first time in more than a decade

Joshua starts at the school that made Matt Hancock the man he is today on Thursday. Jaya starts part time at the village primary today. And thus last night both dressed up in their new uniforms as you can see below.

The pest seems to have a problem tucking his shirt inside his trousers. My late father had the same problem and would quote his headmaster from when he was at Yardley Court or Tonbridge, I cannot remember which, saying “Winnifrith, in the occident shirts go inside trousers.” I inherited the same failing in my schooldays and so the gene passes on to Joshua.

Then there was his tie. I have not worn one for years. I keep an MCC tie just in case I use hugely expensive membership and go to Lords one day and I hang on to my club colours tie from London Irish for some reason. But wear one? Not at my wedding to Joshua’s mum or at my father’s funeral did I wear a tie, I just don’t wear them.

But I vaguely remembered how to tie them and Jim Mellon says the effort below is a good one and, modestly, I agree.
