Photo article from the Welsh hovel: braving the rain to harvest

My hero, Charles Ingalls, would have been proud of me as I defied almost non stop rain to start harvesting. I also brought in stacks of wood for the stove in the living room as it really is getting cold and the gas heating seems to be on the blink, yet again.

First up below up the crab apples from four trees. In year one I made one pot of crab apple jelly but each year I get to make more as the trees I planted in the new top orchard  get older and bigger. I’d hope for a record five pots this year.

Then come the marrows and squashes. We have eaten a good few of both during the summer so this is just what is left. It has not been a bumper harvest but it’s no disgrace either. Having ben cleaned they are now drying for storing in the larder where they will remain edible right up to Christmas.
