Photo article from the Welsh Hovel - the last jam of the season is an experiment

The Mrs berates me for making too much jam and chutney. I have about 65 jars in my larder which come Christmas present time will win rave reviews but that is neither here nor there. I am a sinner. I had wound down my jam activities for the year but then my pal C called asking if I could do anything with a stack of small, rather bitter green grapes he’s grown. One of my two vines has survived and i hope to be a grape producer myself in a few years so I thought it was worth an experiment.

I also had a few purple grapes from Tesco which were starting to go off so into the mix they all went as I tried a recipe for grape jam.

i am not sure it will be a best seller. For starters it is a bit runny, grapes being almost entirely water. The jars are getting less runny but it is not the right texture. And the jam is brown. Folks, I sense, prefer the red or purple of my other jams: strawberry, raspberry, damson, blackberry and apple or blackcurrant. For some reason, brown jam looks unappealing. The taste is okay but not a blinder. It was an experiment which, I am sure, I can fob off on someone, who is preferably colour blind, come yuletide.
