I had thought that we had escaped unscathed but daybreak revealed otherwise. The old and very large pear tree at the centre of my vegetable garden had toppled.
The damage done is to the garlic, shallots and onions I had already planted this Autumn. Cutting away smaller branches this afternoon I think the shallots and onions are safe and some garlic has survived but some bulbs lie under a huge branch and having already shot above surface I fear they will have bought the ranch. I will do more cutting tomorrow to quantify my garlic losses.
A smaller tree on land owned by the council had also fallen on one of my cherry trees but neighbour E and I lifted it off. No damage done.
As for the pears, they were wooden, small and inedible. Now that I drink almost nothing I cannot even use them to make pear vodka. And when friend C brings his chain saw the good news is that my woodshed, now only three quarters full after a very cold start to the winter, will be fully replenished. So, apart from the garlic, God has really been most helpful.

Out in the fields, the River dee is flooded as you can see. The old orchard is under water and it now encroaches into the garden as well. Perhaps God might arrange for a few days without rain now?
