A three nil win was a fair reflection of a game West Ham dominated. But for the failure of the referee to spot a blatant push on Andy Carroll in the 18th minute, Mark Noble could have made it four. And, since this was the early kick off game West Ham are now 4th in the Premiership. It will not last more than a couple of hours but let me enjoy it while I can.
Man of the match Kevin Nolan was imperious and managed not to get booked – his goal was a fine effort. Mark Noble was as terrier-like as ever (thank heavens he was not sold). Up front Andy Carroll was excellent ( not just a big bloke who can head the ball) and Vaz Te is going to cause problems all season against any defence ( he also links very well with Demmel). I just wish he’d try to run into the box a bit more. A few clumsy challenges and (Noble, pen) would become a regular feature. Even the defence was solid enough although I cannot say that I was sorry to see Collins limp off to be replaced by Tomkins who should be starting every game.
A third clean sheet at home (from three games) and Upton Park is starting to become a fortress (I said, starting) once again. All in all, very satisfying ( although injuries to Demel and Carroll a bit of a concern) and I stand by my prediction of this morning that West Ham can now stay up with ease. There are a clutch of winnable games now ahead (mostly at home), confidence is high and the platform is there. As for Fulham… I also stand by my prediction that the Cottagers will be a bottom six side this year. They are better than Norwich, Reading and Wigan but, today at least, not by much.
