The Celebrity Injunction - Its still standing, yeah, yeah, yeah

I write this on a website hosted in the US and as someone currently resident in Greece. I hope that the law firm Web Sheriff takes this on board as it seeks to enforce a celebrity injunction applicable to media outlets in England and Wales but nowhere else. The law is an ass.

Britain's top Judges at the Supreme Court today ruled by an majority verdict that the injunction should stand. One dissenter pointed out that anyone could find out which celebs had been up to what in olive oil filled baths without the use of condoms in just a few minutes on the internet and nearly all of us know about what has gone on anyway..

But the majority view was the celebs had spent vast sums on bully boy lawyers letters to get blog posts and tweets removed and in getting whole websites taken down unless they removed articles which breached no injunction but merely mentioned the celebs in a way the celebs did not like. And this North Korean type censorship - only available to those with deep pockets - it was argued, meant that there was a point in continuing the injunction as it is working to protect the privacy of these bullying, attention seeking (when it suits), vain couple..

Those Judges holding that view do not live in the real world. Go onto twitter and search #injunction and it is all there for anyone to see. The fascist Web Sheriff firm will complain to twitter whose legal department will tell tweeters to take down posts Web Sherrif does not like whether they break the law or not. But as every tweet is pulled another one (or more) takes its place.

Only in England & Wales could the judges be so out of touch. I am reminded of the famous Peter Cook sketch after Jeremy Thorpe was somehow acquitted of being involved in a conspiracy to murder his gay lover Norman Scott.
