Remember that before the Brexit vote the City warned that if we voted to leave the EU then tens of thousands of well paid bankster jobs across London would be lost. Oddly the Remainers thought that this would drive folks to vote for them because - outside London we really care about ensuring banksters continue to earn megabucks.
Maybe if Project Fear had announced that if we stayed in the EU all banksters would be lead through the streets in chains and pelted with rotten fruit the result might have been different? As it was, cheered by the thought of thousands of banksters being fired and losing everything, the UK voted to leave. And now the bankster firing fest is underway...but hang on!
So far there seem to have been no job losses in London. But Commerzbank, Germany's second largest bank, announced this week it was firing one fifth of its staff. Next week we are told that Holland's largest bank, ING, is going to be handing out thousands of black bin liners as it tells many of its staff to clear their desks. And of course Deutsche Bank, Europe's biggest bank, is teetering on the edge of collapse so one imagines that it will be sacking banksters at a rate of knots too.
I feel robbed. George Osborne, the BBC and many others told me that if I voted for Brexit I could be guaranteed the treat of heading up to London to see banksters crying into their champagne as they were fired en masse because all the banking jobs would be moved to places like Holland and Germany.
I was really looking forward to this as a Christmas treat. You know, an afternoon at Canary Wharf jeering at banksters as they wonder how they will fund their coke habits going forward, taken in a show in the West End and then a quick tour of Fulham to see all the "For Sale" signs going up as over-geared financiers tried to sell in a panic. I just couldn't wait for this Brexit bonus.
But it seems that the only banks that are firing staff are those at the heart of the economic disaster that is the Eurozone. Who could possibly have imagined that Project Fear would have made the whole thing up?
