Its 2023 so everything has to be a political statement about what is happening now, even when it is remembering events of 78 years ago, the liberation of Auschwitz. And so, on Holocaust Remembrance day we all look back and remember.

World War One ended 100 years ago this week and so, quite rightly, the media is giving wall to wall coverage to ceremionies and other tributes. It was a ghastly and pointless conflict but we should honour the fallen in that conflict and others and show our respect. Of course some Cambridge students and pampered Serbian soccer players at Manchester United will not. That is a sad reflection on them. But there is one Rememberance day event the liberal elites, the BBC and its sister paper the Guardian will do their best to ignore. They want you to forget.

On the steps up to the front door of the Greek Hovel in the side of the bread oven there is a small hole in which a curious, rusting, metal object, pictured below, has always sat. I have always wondered what it is. George the Architect says it is a World War One bomb which would have been dropped from planes, minus of course the fuse and the head. Well maybe, but that begs other questions...

A few years ago I wrote about how I felt a sense of resentment at the moral pressure to wear a poppy at this time of year. The Paddington stares of disapproval if you did not wear one were just becoming a little too sanctimonious. There seemed a race by broadcasters, politicians and other virtue signallers to be the first to display a dash of red on their lapel. Why wait for November 11 when you can start wearing a poppy in early October? In fact why not buy one in September?

Let me be clear the right AfD party in Germany are vile folks. I would not have been among the 13% of Krauts who voted for them had I had the vote. Calling them Nazis, as a few hundred left wing protesters, covered extensively by the BBC, did diminishes the horror of what the Nazis actually did but they are the closest thing Germany has seen to a Nazi since 1945. That does not excuse vile smears the BBC carried against the AFD. It was pure fake news.

I noted earlier today that World War One was pointless and that folks rewrite history aggressively to show otherwise. But the Nobel prize for rewriting WW1 history goes to the French Embassy in London as this tweet below demonstrates. Linking the slaughter of Flanders to the peace in Europe created by the EU is tasteless as well as wrong. Perhaps the lying Froggies might wish to discuss NATO, Bosnia, The Ukraine, the Basque conflict, Cyprus, EU funding of Hamas killers, how Reagan & Thatcher delivered the end of the cold war with policies most EU nations opposed and many other matters.

We are, this week, remembering one of the bloodiest battles of 1917, Passchendaele. Rightly we remember the brave men of both sides who gave their lives for their country. They deserve our respect and should be honoured. But once again many endeavour to rewrite history and pretend that World War One was not utterly pointless.

Comrade Corbyn is in trouble again for stating that World war One was pointless. In doing so he shows no disrespect to anyone and is, as it happns, factually correct. Yet unthinking right wingers score cheap points. Other right wingers such as shock jock Jon Gaunt engage in Poppy fascism. Did the war of 1939-45 give us the right to wear what we want?

As a libertarian I oppose foreign wars. I'd like to see the UK spend less on defence and argue that nearly all of of overseas ventures have been monumental and costly failures. Yes I would include World War One in that category. We entered WW2 for the wrong reasons (imperial treaty alliances) but ultimately it was a just war. Would a full scale war against ISIS be a just war? Could I support it?
