November 18 2024 and it is already Dr David Viner day! The global warming is falling fast!

It was 7.30 in the evening and as the rest of the family finished supper I was tasked with walking up to the village to buy some Persil. But as I stepped out of the back door I realised at once what was happening. “Come quickly Joshua, come Jaya guess what’s happening?” I shouted. A few seconds later “it’s snowing” they screamed in joyful unison. But this was not meant to happen.

The snow is blowing quite hard now. As I trekked to the store already cars and the hedges had a good covering. Yet back in 2000 we were told “Snowfalls are now just a thing of the past”: According to Dr David Viner, a senior research scientist at the climatic research unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia, within a few years winter snowfall would become “a very rare and exciting event. Children just aren’t going to know what snow is.”

I mark Dr David Viner Day each year. Joshua is now two months and two days into his ninth year. Jaya is 2 days into her fourth. And, without leaving these shores, both have seen snow every year of their lives, sometimes very heavy snow.

UEA was viewed as the pre-eminent global warming forecaster. But if its lead player Dr Viner was just so utterly wrong with his short term forecasts why are we spending trillions pursuing net zero policies and consigning the old and poor to fuel poverty on the basis of other similar but longer term forecasts?

Happy Dr David Viner day, it has come early this winter!
